The vice president had prepared extensively for their debate, and peppered nearly every answer with a comment designed to enrage the former president. Here are some takeaways from the debate:A turning point when Harris jabs Trump over the size of his rally crowds: Harris came onstage with a clear plan: Throw Trump off his game. When the vice president mentioned Trump’s criminal conviction and outstanding legal issues, he bit. Trump indulges in conspiracy theories: Despite signals from even his running mate, Trump did not refrain from repeating the conspiracy theory du jour during the debate. Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesAs Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump take the stage tonight in Philadelphia in their first face-to-face meeting, the spotlight will also shine on the host of the debate: ABC News. Moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis will have a much different view in front of them than when ABC News first secured the high-stakes presidential debate in May. It’s a big test for the Disney-owned network in the only scheduled debate between Harris and Trump in the 2024 race that could serve as a make-or-break moment for either campaign. But Harris’ team wanted the mics hot the entire night and demanded the network change the rule.

JD Vance introduces former President Donald Trump during a rally at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on July 27 in St. Stephen Maturen/Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance continue to falsely describe how one of their major policy proposals, across-the-board tariffs, would work. Trump has falsely, and repeatedly, claimed that China – not US importers – pays the tariff. “It’s fair to call a tariff a tax because that’s exactly what it is,” said Erica York, a senior economist at the right-leaning Tax Foundation. People walk past an Apple store in the Americana at Brand shopping center on December 26, 2023 in Glendale, California. Apple Intelligence — the collective brandname for all of Apple’s own AI tools — is intended to be more of a personal assistant than anything else. What about your data: Since Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT will be used for largely different purposes, the amount and type of information users send to each AI may be different, too. While Apple users will have to send their personal information and AI queries to OpenAI if they want to use ChatGPT, Apple has said that most of the time Apple Intelligence won’t be sending user data anywhere. As much as possible, Apple will try to process AI prompts directly on your device using smaller AI models.

Sven Hoppe/picture alliance/Getty ImagesThe women’s and men’s Olympic triathlons will go ahead on Wednesday in the French capital, Paris 2024 organizers and World Triathlon announced. Poor water quality levels in the River Seine had led to the cancellation of numerous training swims and forced the postponement of the men’s triathlon, which was scheduled for Tuesday. About $1.5 billion (1.4 billion Euros) was spent trying to clean up the river ahead of the Games. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river earlier this month to display her confidence in the river’s water quality.

Now, newer offerings allow homeowners to rent out portions of their homes on an even shorter-term basis, often by the hour. One of these platforms is Swimply, an online marketplace for private pool rentals that launched in 2020, just as the pandemic halted travel and more people looked to get their kicks locally. Peer-to-peer rental marketplaces of all kinds have popped up: RentMyCourt (private tennis and pickleball court rentals), SniffSpot (backyard rentals for dogs), CurbFlip (driveway and parking space rentals) and Vanly (driveway and shower rentals for people traveling in camper vans or RVs). Younger homebuyers are keenly aware of the opportunity to offset their expenses with extra cash. While the extra income is a focus for many homeowners, some participating in this budding industry say they’ve found something unexpected: community.

Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.

Las Vegas Review-journal | Tribune News Service | Getty ImagesOn your next visit to Vegas, an extra set of eyes will be watching you if you decide to hop onto the local transit system. Violent crime on transit systems, specifically, remains an issue in major metro areas, with a report released in late 2023 by the Department of Transportation detailing concerns from transit agency officials around the U.S. about rising violence on their transit systems. Atteberry stressed that the ZeroEyes system is not designed to detect lawful, legal firearms that might be in a holster or packed in a purse. "AI technology comes from the data; if we do not capture the data, there is no successful AI," Dei said. A.I. Can Write Poetry, but It Struggles With Math

But curiously, these learners — artificially intelligent chatbots — often struggle with math. Chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT can write poetry, summarize books and answer questions, often with human-level fluency. These systems can do math, based on what they have learned, but the results can vary and be wrong. chatbots have difficulty with math because they were never designed to do it,” said Kristian Hammond, a computer science professor and artificial intelligence researcher at Northwestern University. The world’s smartest computer scientists, it seems, have created artificial intelligence that is more liberal arts major than numbers whiz.

Donald Trump walks off stage after speaking at a campaign rally on July 20, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Vance defended his loyalty to the US, after Vice President Kamala Harris said he “will be loyal only to Trump, not to our country.”“There’s some bad news actually, Vice President Kamala Harris, she doesn’t like me,” Vance said in remarks about two hours before Trump took the stage. “Kamala Harris said something to the effect that … I have no loyalty to this country,” he continued. “Well, I don’t know, Kamala, I did serve in the United States Marine Corps and build a business. The only unity we saw today was between Donald Trump, JD Vance, and their Project 2025 agenda,” Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa said in a statement.

Security experts said CrowdStrike's routine update of its widely used cybersecurity software, which caused clients' computer systems to crash globally on Friday, apparently did not undergo adequate quality checks before it was deployed. The latest version of its Falcon Sensor software was meant make CrowdStrike clients' systems more secure against hacking by updating the threats it defends against. Patrick Wardle, a security researcher who specializes in studying threats against operating systems, said his analysis identified the code responsible for the outage. It's unclear how that faulty code got into the update and why it wasn't detected before being released to customers. Other security companies have had similar episodes in the past.

Vance earlier this year told ABC he would not have certified the 2020 election results until states submitted pro-Trump electors. JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

Many of the questions that predated Saturday evening’s assassination attempt have largely faded into the background as former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and their respective allies rush to adapt their campaigns to the new landscape. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” Trump told the Washington Examiner of his convention speech following the assassination attempt. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said. The former president has, so far, been restrained in his response to the attempt on his life. Other members of his party have not, with some immediately suggesting – without evidence – that the alleged gunman was driven to act by heated campaign rhetoric.

With that in mind, the authors of the note — led by Ryan Hammond — are closely watching downward revenue revisions for signs the AI spending isn't paying off. "Today's hyperscalers will eventually be required to prove that revenues and earnings will be generated from their investments," analysts wrote. "Investors have expressed uncertainty about the return on those investments for the mega-cap tech stocks, but these stocks remain extremely popular," the analysts wrote. Goldman also points out that, according to a measure it tracks, just 5% of companies are currently using AI to produce goods and services. "Adjusting for profits of these companies, the AI capex cycle still pales in comparison to the tech bubble," the analysts wrote.

"Our conversations with investors have been defined by skepticism about latter stages of AI adoption," Ryan Hammond of Goldman's portfolio strategy research team said in a recent note to clients. "Even among investors that are long-term bullish on the potential gains from AI adoption, there appears to be considerable uncertainty about the timeline." Goldman's AI adoption tracker showed that only 5% of U.S. companies are using generative AI to produce goods and services. Many software companies tied to AI posted disappointing guidance during the last earnings seasons that triggered a sizeable sell-off, Goldman noted. Investors should focus on revised sales forecasts of AI-related companies, Goldman said.
